I thought I’d put my thoughts to writing. I’m 30 years old and have been a pokie addict since the age of 18. I’ve held a stable job my whole life but sadly have chosen to waste my entire earnings as I get them. I have won some big wins, $20k, $7k, $5k… It goes on.. But I will always come out behind being a high stakes gambler. I’ve always been paid monthly and at times I’ve done $4000 in just a night. It has destroyed what could of been the best part of my life, I have been ashamed of myself and lost a great woman through it all. I took the liberty to take one on one counseling two years ago but I soon found myself back there. I am starting to realize as much as counseling can help, only I can stop myself. In February 2016 I had declared myself bankrupt. 30-40 I am going to turn it all around, I believe I can because I have found some motivation in my own disappointment. If you are reading this and can relate to it, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. It could be the first step to finding the strength we all have inside us to say enough is enough!
Thanks for sharing your story – it sounds as if you have had a really tough time and have lost many things through gambling, not just money but a relationship and years of your life. It sounds as if you have reached a point where you are determined that the next 10 years are different from the last. I’m also glad that you were able to access one on one counselling – that can make a huge difference. I’d encourage you to link in with them again, as all of our research shows that the more support you have, the more successful you’ll be in managing your gambling. You can also call the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858 to speak to a trained counsellor who can give some good tips on how to keep your motivation high, or give you a referral to a financial counsellor who can give you support with organising your finances. Of course, this website has some good resources too if you are interested:
All the best with it, and hope to hear from you soon.
