Community guidelines

The Gambling Help forums are a safe space where you can talk with others who are concerned about their own gambling or that of their partners, friends or family. These forums are a place where you can anonymously share your experiences, thoughts and feelings, in a safe and supportive environment.

Gambling Help is funded by the Responsible Gambling Fund, within Liquor & Gaming NSW, to assist those affected by problem gambling.

Important: the forums are not a counselling or crisis service – if you or someone you know is in an emergency or at immediate risk of harm to yourself or others in any way, please call emergency services on 000 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.

If you need to talk to someone now, phone Gambling Help on 1800 858 858, Lifeline on 13 11 14, BeyondBlue on 1300 22 4636, or the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467.

Please remember that the information shared on these forums is not designed to replace legal, financial, medical or other professional advice.

We rely on our members to keep these forums a safe place for people to share their stories, and to do this, we ask that our members remember the following rules when posting to the Gambling Help forums –

Be yourself, but remain anonymous

Remember that forums are public places – please think carefully about what you post online, and don’t share personal information that you would not feel comfortable sharing with a stranger. Don’t post information that may identify you or others, such as your address, email address, phone number or links to your social media pages.

When choosing your username to register for the forums, we recommend using a pseudonym or your first name only.

Members may only have one username on the forums at any one time; multiple accounts are not permitted.

Be friendly and respectful

We encourage members to make new users feel welcome. If you are a new member, please be sure to introduce yourself in our Introductions section / New Members area.

Remember that other users may have different views and experiences from yours; please be respectful and non-judgemental of differences of opinions and beliefs, and don’t make assumptions about other members.

The moderators of this site will not publish any posts that are obscene, offensive, provocative or inappropriate content, or post content that may incite hatred or violence, or break the law (or encourage others to break the law) in any way.

They will also not publish any posts that promote gambling or use language that may trigger the desire to gamble.

Posts, usernames or avatars that are racist, sexist, homophobic, sexually explicit, malicious, abusive, discriminatory, or that personally attack or put down other members are not permitted. Such posts, avatars and/or usernames will not be tolerated and will not be published.

If you see material that is abusive or potentially harmful, please report it to us using the “report post” button on the forums.

Be on topic

When contributing to existing conversations, try to stay ‘on topic’. If something comes up in an existing thread that you would like to discuss further, please start a new thread.

When creating new discussion threads, please post in the relevant category/sub-forum and give your thread a clear topic title (have a look around at other topics on the forums to see where a thread should go). If your thread is placed in the wrong forum, it will be moved by a moderator.

We encourage users to share experiences, thoughts and feelings with gambling-related harm – it is likely that others will find your story helpful or interesting, and we all like to know that we’re not alone, so please don’t hold back.

Be aware

Please remember that there are times when we are obliged under law to make reports to the relevant authorities – if you post something that indicates that your safety or the safety of others is at imminent risk, we may need to share your IP address and any other information we have about you with emergency services who can help protect your safety and/or the safety of others.

While we understand that debating political issues around gambling and gambling-related harm can be of therapeutic value to members, it is important to remember that the purpose of our forums is to support our members on their recovery from gambling-related harm.

The views posted by members are not necessarily the views of Gambling Help, and are not endorsed by us. Members are solely responsible for their own communications within the Gambling Help forums and any consequences of posting such communications.

The Gambling Help forums encourage a diversity of opinions and different points of view, and while you may not always agree with another member’s opinion, it is important to remember that all users are entitled to their own points of view.

Please remember that users will come for a variety of backgrounds with different ages, skills levels and differing levels of familiarity with topics that may be discussed; in order to facilitate discussion on the forums, please only use English in your posts.

We maintain the right to remove posts, avatars or display names that are potentially harmful, abusive, derogatory, discriminatory or otherwise objectionable; or that advertise products, services or events for profit or gain.

All posts are read and monitored by the Gambling Help administrators. To protect the safety of our members, particularly from distressing or abusive content, all posts are moderated to check for potential breaches of our Community Guidelines. Once posts are published, these are visible publicly, whether you are logged in as a member or not.
